5-Drawer Tool Chest - My Thoughts About This Husky Tool

I’m back at it, but for this post, I’m taking a break from an actual project and I’m writing about a tool. A Husky tool to be exact. And to be clear, I’m part of the Home Depot’s Prospective Program (#THDProspective), so they sent me this tool to check out, put to use in my shop and review it. Also, disregard the dust that is already on it…in a woodshop, everything ends up with dust on it. ha

THE TOOL:

When The Home Depot reached out to me about working with them, I was excited to say the least. They allowed me to choose some Husky tools I would like to use, and this Husky 27” 5-Drawer Rolling Tool Chest is one of the things I picked. After all, I needed a good place to put some of my mechanics tools and woodworking hand tools.

SPOILER ALERT: I like it.

BUILD QUALITY:

The build quality of this rolling tool chest is quite sturdy. It has a rugged black coating (almost like powder coating, but I’m not sure if that’s what it is) that looks fantastic and is somehow, a little dust resistant. That’s important in my shop since I do a lot of woodworking and EVERYTHING ends up with a little dust on it. ha. So, I’m not quite sure how they achieved that, but I like it.

It has large wheels that don’t get jammed on small stuff in the shop, allowing the tool chest to roll nicely.

The drawers look like they can handle a lot of abuse and even have the soft close feature, which is a nice touch.

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS:

There are some small details that I appreciate about this cabinet and one is that it can be locked. That’s important if you’re in a space where kids might be and you don’t want someone getting a sharp chisel out and hurting themselves. Obviously, the lock would help with theft but not totally deter it because lifting the entire cabinet is quite heavy, but it can be done with two people, so there’s that.

Another small detail that I think goes a long way is the foam mats they include for each drawer. When your tool chest arrives, you’ll probably notice that all of the mats will be in the top drawer, along with the key. It’s a nice touch and could really keep some of your tools from getting banged up on the metal drawer. NOTE: if you pick up one of these pre-assembled from a Home Depot store, they will probably already have the foam in each of the drawers. Isn’t that nice!

Yet another small detail that I like is that the casters are locking and they do a good job at it. I always like a good, locking caster. Some just do not lock easily or hold their place very well, but these seem to do just that. I approve!

PROVEN RUGGED:

Right when I got this tool chest, we were in the middle of moving from Mississippi to Kentucky. I actually used the tool chest to hold a ton of tools, and anything spare that I could fit in it. It seemed like a great way to transport things in the UHaul that I had. And I was right! It traveled quite well, arriving at the other end just like I had hoped…and it was a great way to protect all of my tools!

Now, I have it in my new shop and it has been so valuable, while we are unpacking and things are in shambles, to have a central place that many of my tools live and I know right where they are.

HOW I PLAN TO USE THE TOOL CHEST:

Since the tool chest can roll and has a flat top, I plan to use it as a surface in my shop to transport wood or items between point A and B. Probably while I’m in the process of making cutting boards, I’ll use the top of this thing to stack material and take it to the next station. In fact, I used it in this very way the last few days working in my old shop before putting it on a truck and moving it. It worked really well for this!

In addition, I would like to put all of my mechanics tools in there, as well as many of my woodworking tools. For the woodworking tools that I use the most, I might make a small tool wall in the new shop, but I’ll have to see how the space all shakes out. I’m going to have to get creative with how I use space in there, but that’s what we all do!

I’m really liking the different draghts so I can find a good spot for all of the tools I’m trying to house. For instance, one of the drawers is just tall enough that I can store my hand planes and other tools similar standing up, resting on the foam mat. I think that’s a good spot for those!

CONCLUSION:

Overall, I’m really liking this rolling tool chest. The functionality of what it will do in my shop will continue to be a great addition!

I mentioned it before, but if you would like to pick up one of these, it would help me out if you would use my link. You could order it online and either pick it up at your local Home Depot store or even have it shipped straight to you! Big thanks to Home Depot for partnering with me on this and supporting my content!

Thanks for following along and I’ll be back with another post very soon!
